In a weird spot with veganism

Veganism is black and white, either you exploit or do not. I used identify myself as a vegan until my values changed when I lived in the island for a few months.

I still can’t consume animal meat and its by-products since I have been vegan for the past four years. What changed within me is my perspective. I accept now why it is difficult for the world to be vegan. We all have a choice to say no to meat, but not all have the privileged to do so. When I became a victim of typhoon Odette, people offered me food, but the food that they offered me are non-vegan. I still refused but certain situations in the island made me more open to the idea that veganism is difficult to achieve for everyone.

The people in the island catch their own fish and kill pigs with their own hands, many do not go to supermarkets to buy pre-packed meat and seafood.

I still hope that one day, the world can be vegan, that animals can be free from exploitation. We are on our way there with more plant-based options and more companies going for more sustainable alternatives.

I cannot call myself vegan anymore because I accept the grey area, I understand why many cannot be vegan. I am conflicted to let go of my beliefs, but change is part of growing up. While I cannot call myself vegan anymore, I will still not take part of animal cruelty.
